Do you mislead or misconstrue with less than fitting word choice?
In a Forbes.com article by Avery Blank, it listed 7 common words powerful people DO NOT use – and says that we shouldn’t either! It goes on to say that words hold power, I subscribe to that totally! Some of the words on the list are ones we use probably every day and it can easily and without realizing it, diminish your message and point. So while you look for what word(s) to use, also consider what word(s) to NOT use. Here they are, see if you can start replacing or alleviating these words all together, when tempted to use them:
~Just (protector words)~
~Very/Absolutely/Totally (drama words)~
~I think… or Arguably (protector words)~
~I’ll try and Don’t worry about it. (ability~ words)~
~Sorry (apology words)~
~Like / Whatever / Etcetera / and so on and so forth (filler words)~
~Actually and Obviously (superior words)~
Ordinary words have the power to throw your message off course and undermine what you want to accomplish. To increase your power, think about the words you use. If used properly, language is your opportunity to empower yourself and your career.
In what way will you change your word choice today to convey your feelings/thoughts more accurately?
I do hope you find this to be valuable! If so, please share this with a friend, family, or colleague who may find it valuable too!
