Millennials!

Do you know how you can work with Millennials? Or are you a Millennial?

millennialsI read an article on LinkedIn with some great stats about Millennials and the workforce: A Recruiters Guide to Attract & Retain Millennials

Here are a few of their noted statistics:

  • The Millennial cohort is significantly larger than previous generations, and has unique career preferences and ambitions.
  • As the Millennial workforce grows, companies will need to change their recruitment strategies to stay competitive.
  • One of this generation’s notable characteristics is increased willingness to make career changes. 83% of Millennials are willing to relocate for the right job that provides them higher salary or better advancement opportunities.
  • By the age 30 Millennials have almost twice as many job and organizational changes as Gen Xers, and almost three times as many job changes as Baby Boomers & Matures.

3 Areas to consider in attracting Millennials:

  1. why millennials mattterStability: 83% of Millennials say company stability is a top priority when considering employers.
  2. Financial Security: 67% would be likely to leave their job for a similar job with better retirement package.
  3. Collaboration: Though Millennials are often labeled as “entitled” or “self-serving”, 74% prefer to collaborate in small groups.

They focus on 3 factors of a job offer: -Compensation Package. -Professional Development. -Opportunities for Advancement.

With some further research on the year span for each age generation I found that different sites offer a variety of information. According to The Center For Generational Kineticscurrently 5 generations make up our society and each has an active role in the marketplace. Depending on the specific workplace, the workforce includes 4-5 generations. Here are birth years for each:

  • Gen Z, iGen, or Centennials: Born 1996 and later
  • Millennials or Gen Y: Born 1977 to 1995
  • Generation X: Born 1965 to 1976
  • Baby Boomers: Born 1946 to 1964
  • Traditionalists or Silent Generation: Born 1945 and before
